CIT files for prepackaged bankruptcy

Century-old CIT Group Inc filed for bankruptcy in the Southern District Court of New York on Sunday.

According to the terms of the bankruptcy, bondholders will hold new CIT Group Inc. (NYSE: CIT) debt worth about 70% of the face value of the old debt. Preferred creditors, including the U.S. government, will get money only after other creditors are paid back. Common shareholders will receive nothing.

In December 2008, the U.S. government invested $2.33 billion dollars in CIT under the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).

Will the shrimp's eye create a better DVD?

Will shrimp's eyes help create a better DVD? The answer is yes. Researchers at the University of Bristol, England, who are studying the shrimp's eye have found a way to create a better DVD.

How is this possible? Scientists discovered that the Mantis shrimp, found off the coast of Australia, can see in 12 primary colors, four times that of humans. The shrimp's eye can detect different kinds of light polarization which is the direction of oscillation in light waves.

Accenture falls on weak fourth quarter earnings

Accenture Fourth Quarter Earnings ReleaseShares of Accenture (NYSE: ACN) are trading in the red in after hours trading today following the company's fiscal fourth quarter earnings release and a weaker than expected first quarter forecast.

For the quarter, the company reported that it had earnings of 39 cents per share. Excluding a previously disclosed restructuring charge, earnings were in line with analyst estimates for 63 cents per share for the quarter.

Some big names set new 52-week highs Tuesday: WAG, ACS, WYE ...

new 52 week highsAll three of the major indexes finished Tuesday in the red, but there were several big names that moved up to new 52-week highs in Tuesday's trading.

Walgreen Co. (NYSE: WAG): The drugstore giant had a really good day on Wall Street after posting better than expected earnings in the morning before the market opened. The company posted earnings of 44 cents per share versus analyst estimates of 39 cents. The stock set a new 52-week high of $38.44 and closed the day up 9.2% at $37.35.

The Fed decision: Attempting to be a non-event

The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee (FOMC) issued its statement today making its best attempt to be a non-event. The language on interest rates and quantitative easing remained largely unchanged, and the decision was unanimous.

This decision was designed to avoid any potential landmines which could disrupt the financial markets. The FOMC wanted this statement to be a non-event and seems to have largely succeeded.

E*Trade Financial prepares for a changing of the guard

E*Trade Financial Corp. (NASDAQ: ETFC) reported Wednesday morning that its chairman and CEO, Donald Layton, will step down at the end of the year. He will retain all of his current responsibilities through the end of 2009, by which time E*Trade hopes to have named a successor.

In a warm and fuzzy press release, Layton summed up his tenure at E*Trade: "It was an exciting but very challenging time as E*TRADE dealt successfully with the severe financial distress of the last two years. Now that our major recapitalization is complete and the online brokerage business is growing again, I have accomplished what was needed for me to end my time as CEO on schedule. I wish to thank everyone involved -- it was a great team effort."

Delcath jumps 18% as its chemotherapy agent gets orphan drug status

Delcath Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: DCTH), which in pre-market trading shot up 48%, closed the trading session up 18% to close at $3.60 after the FDA granted its chemotherapy agent doxorubicin, used primarily for live cancer an orphan drug status. The Orphan Drug Act was created to encourage and promote research for therapies of rare conditions and diseases that affect less than 200,000 a year in the United States.

Baker Hughes to acquire BJ Services

Baker Hughes to Buy BJ ServicesSome big acquisition news in the oilfield service industry today, as Baker Hughes (NYSE: BHI) announced that it would be buying BJ Services (NYSE: BJS).

The deal is for cash and stock, and is reportedly valued at $5.5 billion.

According to the details that have been released, BJS stockholders will be getting 0.40035 shares of BHI stock in addition to $2.69 in cash.

August 25, 2009. Ben Bernanke and the Fed are ordered by a federal court to disclose details of their bailout transactions during the financial meltdown last year.

Two reporters from Bloomberg News filed suit in federal court under the Freedom of Information Act and won a case that "ruled against the U.S. Federal Reserve's attempt to block disclosure of companies that participated in and securities covered by a series of emergency financial programs as the global credit crisis began to intensify."

Time Warner inks deal with YouTube

time warner youtube dealIn a move to bring profitability to its popular video sharing site YouTube, Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) has inked a deal with Time Warner, Inc. (NYSE: TWX) to show clips of the company's television shows and movies.

When Google announced back in 2006 that it would be paying $1.65 billion for the popular video sharing site, a lot of critics questioned whether or not the company would be able to turn a profit from the site, which at the time had around 46% of the online video market share.

Exxon Mobil will not challenge Valdez judgement

Exxon Valdez Oil SpillExxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM) announced today that it would not challenge the ruling of an appeals court stating that it was to pay $470 million in interest on the $507.5 million judgment related to the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

The Exxon Valdez oil spill took place back in 1989, and victims have been trying to get some money from Exxon ever since. In 1994 the victims won a $5 billion judgment, but Exxon has fought that ruling for the past 15 years.

Madoff receives a sentence of 150 years

Bernie Madoff was in federal court today, where he was given a 150 year sentence for charges related to his Ponzi scheme.

Reports from the courtroom state that Madoff, the mastermind behind the largest ever Ponzi scheme, showed little to no emotion today when he learned that he would be spending the rest of his life in a jail cell. Due to federal sentencing guidelines, Madoff must serve at least 80% of his sentence, so he will not be eligible for parole until 2129.

Stanford pleads not guilty to fraud charges

Texas billionaire R. Allen Stanford pleaded 'not guilty' today in a federal court arraignment to charges that he ran a $7 billion Ponzi scheme. Not only is Stanford being charged with running the Ponzi scheme, there are also allegations that he paid $100,000 to Leroy King, the former chief executive officer of Antigua's Financial Services Regulatory Commission.

This day has been coming for a while. It seems as though the government has been looking into Stanford's investment company since 2005, but it was only this past February that they shut down the Houston office of his investment company, Stanford Financial Group.

The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee (FOMC) issued its unanimous decision. The language on interest rates and quantitative easing remained unchanged. It indicated that inflation is not a problem despite a recent rise in oil prices and sees economic stabilization although continued weakness.

This decision was designed to avoid potential landmines which could disrupt the financial markets. In other words, the FOMC wanted this statement to be a non-event and seems to have largely succeeded.
